I've been in the beauty industry since 2001, and over the last several years my work has narrowed to one specialty: sewn-in weft hair extensions, paired with dimensional color and seamless grey blending.
If you've been researching extensions, you've probably read a confusing pile of information. There are a lot of methods, a lot of opinions, and a lot of salons that install one method whether or not it's actually right for your hair. I want to walk you through what sewn-in wefts actually are, who they work best for, and what to expect when you book a consultation with me at Maven Salon in Old Saybrook, CT.
What sewn-in wefts actually are
A weft is a long strip of extension hair, attached to a thin top edge. I install wefts by first placing a row of small beads on a section of your natural hair (no glue, no heat, no adhesive). Then I stitch the weft to that bead row using a needle and thread. The weft sits completely flat against your scalp.
You end up with one, two, or three rows of wefts (depending on how much density you want) hidden under the top layer of your own hair. From the outside, all anyone sees is your hair. Longer, fuller, more dimensional.

How sewn-in wefts compare to other methods
Tape-ins: Use adhesive strips. Fast to install but need re-application every 6 to 8 weeks. The adhesive can be harder on fine hair over time.
Fusion (keratin bond): Each strand of extension hair is bonded individually using a keratin tip and heat. Very durable but more labor-intensive to install and remove, and more wear on your natural hair.
Clip-ins: You install them yourself each day. Good for occasional events. Not a daily wear solution.
Sewn-in wefts (what I do): No glue, no heat, no chemicals. Sit flattest of any method. Most comfortable. Last longest between appointments. Hair-friendly when installed properly.
What the consultation covers
Every new extension guest at Maven starts with a 30-minute in-salon Extension Consultation ($50). In that 30 minutes I:
- Assess your natural hair length, density, and condition
- Talk through your goals, lifestyle, and how you wear your hair daily
- Show you the actual weft material and how it'll attach
- Quote you a realistic install price and ongoing maintenance cost
- Plan color matching or dimensional blending if you want it
- Confirm whether sewn-in wefts are actually right for your hair (sometimes they aren't, and I'll tell you that)
After the consultation we book your install appointment. The install itself runs 3 to 4 hours and includes a finishing Signature Blowdry.
What it costs
Initial install pricing is custom (it depends on your length, the number of rows you want, and whether we're color-matching or blending). I'll quote you exactly at consultation.

Aftercare that actually matters
The biggest factor in how long your extensions look beautiful is your home care routine. The four things I tell every new install client:
- Sleep with hair braided or loosely tied. Friction is the enemy.
- Silk pillowcase. Same reason. Helps with your natural hair too.
- Quality sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. The lightened sections and the weft fibers are both more porous. They need more love.
- Heat protection before any styling. Non-negotiable for any hair, but especially for extensions.
