How Often Should You Get a Balayage Refresh? An Old Saybrook Stylist Explains
Share
One of the most common questions I get from new guests is some version of: "How often do I really need to come in for balayage?" The honest answer is: less often than you'd think - and that's the whole point of the technique.
The short answer
For most balayage guests, the refresh cycle looks like:
- Full balayage refresh: every 4-6 months
- Gloss or toner refresh between full appointments: every 6-10 weeks
- Cut and Signature Blowdry: on your own timeline - every 8-12 weeks for most lengths
That said, the timing varies based on your hair's natural color, how lifted your balayage is, your at-home care routine, and what your week-to-week life looks like. Let me walk you through the why.
Why balayage doesn't need monthly upkeep
Balayage is a hand-painted highlighting technique. Unlike traditional foil highlights - which apply color from root to tip in a uniform pattern - balayage is painted on freehand, with the lightest pieces concentrated in the mid-lengths and ends. That natural placement is exactly what lets it grow out softly.
With traditional highlights, a quarter-inch of regrowth feels like a hard line at your root. With balayage, that same regrowth blends into the natural shadow of your base color - so the grow-out reads as dimension, not a sign your color needs updating.
This is exactly what we mean at Maven Salon by lived-in color. It's painted to be beautiful at week 4, week 12, and week 20 - not just the day you leave the salon.
What happens at a balayage refresh
A full balayage refresh appointment at Maven typically involves:
- Consultation - we look at your current color, talk about what you love and what you'd change, and plan placement.
- Painted highlights - concentrated in the mid-lengths and ends where the previous balayage has grown out or softened.
- Optional root smudge or shadow root - to deepen and soften the transition between your natural base and the painted pieces.
- Custom gloss or toner - to neutralize unwanted brassiness and lock in the exact tone we're going for.
- Signature Blowdry - finishing wash, blow-out, and style so you can see how it'll actually wear.

The "in-between" appointment most people don't know about
If you can only commit to 2-3 color appointments a year, here's the trick: book a gloss-only refresh 6-10 weeks after your full balayage. It's a 60-90 minute appointment, costs much less than a full balayage, and it does two important things:
- Re-tones any brassiness or color shift from sun, water, or product buildup.
- Adds shine and seals the cuticle so your hair looks healthy and freshly-done.
For existing guests, our Gloss with Signature Blow-dry is a great way to extend the life of your balayage between full refreshes.
How to make balayage last longer at home
A few habits make a huge difference:
- Wash less, dry shampoo more - every wash strips a little tone. Stretching washes to every 2-3 days extends color life by weeks.
- Cool-water final rinse - closes the cuticle and locks in shine.
- Purple shampoo (1x weekly max) - for blondes, to neutralize brass.
- UV/heat protection - sun fades color fast. A leave-in with UV protection is your friend.
- Quality conditioner from mid-length to ends - the lightened sections are the most porous and need the most love. See our Favorite Products for what we recommend.
