First-Time Balayage at Maven Salon: What to Expect at Your Old Saybrook Appointment

Booking a first balayage appointment can feel like a leap - especially if you're switching salons or it's your first time going hand-painted. The most common worry I hear from new guests is some version of "I'm not sure exactly what I want." That's the whole point of the consultation. You don't need to walk in with a Pinterest board figured out.

Here's what to expect at your first balayage appointment at Maven Salon in Old Saybrook.

Before you book: the Color Consultation

For first-time color guests, we ask everyone to start with an in-salon Color Consultation - a 30-minute conversation that lets your stylist see your hair in real light, hear your goals, and plan the right service for you. The fee is $50, and it's applied directly to your first color service, so it's not extra spend.

In the consultation we'll cover:

  • Your hair history - past color, current condition, density, length
  • Your goals and reference photos (bring 2-3 if you have them)
  • How much time you want to spend on your hair day-to-day
  • The right service to book, the price range, and how long it'll take
  • Anything that needs to happen before your color appointment - like a strand test, deep conditioning, or removing previous color

By the end you'll leave with a clear plan, a price, and a service booked. Book your consultation here.

Choosing your first balayage service

Maven offers five first-time-guest color options, each tailored to a different goal:

  • Color Option #1 - Gloss Up: for guests whose current color is a great base and just needs refreshing.
  • Color Option #2 - Mini Face Frame Highlight: money piece + sides only, with a root tap, shadow root, and custom gloss.
  • Color Option #3 - The Refresh: a fuller-coverage color refresh.
  • Color Option #4 - The Glow Up: deeper transformation, ideal for first-time balayage guests.
  • Color Option #5 - The Transformation: our most comprehensive first-time color experience.

Your consultation determines which option is right. See our full hair color page for details.

The day of your balayage appointment

First-time balayage appointments at Maven typically run 3-5 hours depending on your hair length, density, and starting color. Here's the typical flow:

  1. Final consultation and color formulation (15-20 minutes) - we revisit the plan, mix your custom color, and section your hair.
  2. Hand-painted application (60-90 minutes) - concentrating the lightest pieces in the mid-lengths and ends, with intentional placement around your face.
  3. Processing time (30-60 minutes) - your color lifts to the right level. Bring a snack, a book, or just enjoy a coffee.
  4. Wash, tone, and gloss (45 minutes) - wash out the lightener, apply a custom gloss to neutralize unwanted tones, and seal in your final color.
  5. Cut (if booked) and Signature Blowdry (45-60 minutes) - finishing cut and full styled blowout.

How to prep

  • Come in with clean hair - washed within the last 24-48 hours. Clean hair lifts more evenly than oily hair.
  • Avoid heavy oils and silicone leave-ins on appointment day - they can interfere with how the color processes.
  • Style your hair how you'd usually wear it - your stylist needs to see how the color will lay on your real-life hair.
  • Bring 2-3 reference photos, but be open. Your hair, lifestyle, and natural color all factor into what's achievable.
  • Eat beforehand and bring water - long color appointments can run 3-5 hours.
  • Wear a dark top - color can stain lighter fabrics.

After your appointment

Your color is "set" within 48 hours, but here's how to make it last:

  • Wait 24-48 hours before washing - let the gloss fully bond.
  • Wash with cool/lukewarm water - hot water opens the cuticle and fades color faster.
  • Use color-safe shampoo and conditioner - see our favorite products page for what we recommend.
  • Heat protection before any styling - non-negotiable for color-treated hair.
  • Book your next appointment before you leave - first-time guests often save 6-10 weeks out for a gloss refresh, and 4-6 months out for the next full balayage.

The Maven difference

What makes a Maven balayage feel different from other salons: we never copy-paste a look. Every color is mapped to your base color, density, condition, lifestyle, and the way you actually wear your hair. We finish every appointment with a Signature Blowdry so you leave with hair you'd be proud to show up to work, school pickup, or a date with.
